ELCA WORSHIP EVENTS...

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am writing today to invite your support for the ministry of Word and Sacrament in the Central/Southern Illinois Synod. The Worship and Liturgical Resources section of the Office of the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA continues to develop worship materials that surround and support Evangelical Lutheran Worship.  The work of interpretation is crucial to the ongoing goal of renewing this church’s worship.

A major step in this ongoing work will be the 2009 Worship at the Center events which will be held in three locations across the ELCA this summer.  These retreats will allow people to think about and experience how we mark and contextualize the central events of our faith in the liturgies of Ash Wednesday and the Three Days.  We will be examining how Evangelical Lutheran Worship invites us to keep these central days as well as the meaning of this journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter for ourselves and for the world. Complete information is at: www.elca.org/worshipevents2009.

I would ask you to give prayerful consideration to assist in the effort to publicize and encourage participation in these events by sharing the attached event flyer with members of your congregations.

Thank you for your partnership and leadership in the ministry of Word and Sacrament.  May you and those you serve find renewal, strength, and hope in our common Lenten journey from death to life in the great and holy days ahead!

Yours in Christ,

Bishop Warren D. Freiheit
